Although we no longer charge fines, there is a cost associated with losing materials borrowed from us.
Our policy states that after 30 days, you will receive your first notification of failed return, the cost of the unreturned items will be charged to your account. To be able to use any part of your library account again, the material must be returned, or the charge must be paid.
Losing a book isn’t the end of the world, and it has no bearing on your ability to check out items in the future. We realize times are tough, which is a street that stretches in both directions.
So, even when you lose an item, then pay for it, you may not immediately be able to check things out again. This is because our process for dealing with overdue is managed between the director and the overdue reporter.
We work as fast as we can, and we do try to be as flexible and understanding as possible, while maintaining our ability to retain most of our circulation materials. As a tax supported institution, it’s important to us to maintain as much financial integrity as possible, and sometimes that means following systems that look tedious, or even unfair from the other side.
Please understand that these policies are put in place as consequence, not punishment, and you will always be welcome to return to the library once you are in good standing.
Thanks,
Anneliese
